Lucy Garrott
Specialist Dyslexia AssessorBA (Hons) QTS, PGCE NASENCo, PG Cert SpLD (Dyslexia)
Lucy is an experienced teacher and specialist assessor, who is passionate about helping individuals to understand their learning needs. She began her career in teaching over 18 years ago after achieving a BA (Hons) degree in Primary Education with a specialism of Language, Literacy and Communication. Lucy worked in primary schools across Kent and Bromley, where she developed a love of teaching students with additional needs.
In 2013, Lucy used this passion to become a Special Educational Needs Coordinator furthering her studies by completing a PGCE National Award of SEN Coordination. In this role, she developed and launched many learning support initiatives including a complete whole school pastoral support programme which was used as a model for other local schools. As a SENCo, Lucy was responsible for managing and monitoring high quality teaching and learning support interventions to ensure all students’ needs were met.
Throughout Lucy’s career, she has taught across all primary age phases from Nursery to Year 6, including teaching within a specialist provision for autistic students and leading an Early Years setting. This means Lucy has extensive knowledge of multi-sensory teaching techniques and how these can be used to support literacy development.
In 2018, Lucy went on to achieve a PGCE in Specialist Teaching and Assessment of Specific Learning Difficulties: Dyslexia. She became a Specialist Dyslexia Teacher, Assessor and SEN Consultant, working with both schools and families to support students with specific difficulties. She is qualified to administer a wide range of assessment tests and tools to diagnose dyslexia, identify weaknesses and support students, parents and schools to better understand their learner profile and ways to help them to reach their full potential. She has worked with both primary and secondary schools to deliver effective training to teaching professionals and has supported SENCos to reflect on and improve whole school systems.
Above all, Lucy is passionate about empowering students in their learning. She believes that it is important to nurture each student’s unique way of learning, challenging their areas of strengths and progressing their areas of development so they can achieve their full potential.
