Victoria Cohen
Speech and Language TherapistBSc (Hons), RCSLT
Victoria received her first-class Honours in BSc Psychology and Speech Pathology from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2003. Following qualification, Victoria’s first post working for the NHS provided her with the opportunity to work with clients with a wide range of difficulties. This included supporting autistic children in a special school provision, working with children of all ages in nurseries, primary and secondary schools, and working in residential settings with adults with communication difficulties as a result of a stroke.
Victoria moved from the NHS to the charitable sector and has worked there for 17 years. Throughout this time she has worked with children of all ages, predominantly in their school setting, working closely with parents, teachers, support assistants and other professionals. Victoria highly values her role as part of a multi-disciplinary team, with an emphasis on taking a holistic approach to working with the child, embedding therapy into their educational setting, and to the importance of sharing knowledge, skills and strategies with the whole team. Her work also involves training and supporting students on placement as part of their speech and language therapy degree studies.
Victoria’s love of travel and exploring different cultures has resulted in key experiences for her in developing her skills in communication, empathy, flexibility, resilience and adventure! This has included volunteering at a local school in Zimbabwe where she taught English and French to primary and secondary aged children, and volunteering in Bangladesh lecturing the first group of Speech and Language therapy undergraduates and providing therapy to children and adults with a range of communication difficulties.
A key priority for Victoria is ensuring that the child’s voice is heard, and their opinions and views are right at the centre of therapeutic input. As such, she has developed a special interest and completed specialist training in selective mutism, Alternative and Augmentative Communication, Talking Mats, Makaton and the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS.)
Victoria is registered with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (registration no. RC0017236) and registered as a Speech and Language Therapist (registration no. SL10033) with the Health and Care Professions Council. She offers speech and language therapy and assessment for children of all ages experiencing difficulties with speech, language and communication.
